Back in 2008 a couple of members of Christchurch and District Model Flying Club had built flying boats. Trials in Christchurch harbor demonstrated the incompatibility of electronics and seawater and with the help of the Bournemouth Water Company the search was on to find fresh water.
Mike heard that a gravel pit near an existing reservoir was worked out and was going to be filled with lovely fresh water, to be set aside for recreational use. The new Recreation Manager was very supportive and added model aircraft flying to his very short list of activities that were unpolluting and quiet: bird watching, kayaking and model yacht sailing.
Since 2012, over 100 models have had their first flights off water at Longham. These are all recorded on Mike’s “RC Groups Longham” thread which has had over 31,000 visits since it was set up. We have to thank Mike’s foresight and persistence for gaining the Club the best water flying site in southern England.
