The British Junior Gliding Team brought back glory for the UK in the World Junior Gliding Championships at Narromine, Australia in December 2015. Tom Arscott (aged only 23) won Gold with Sam Roddie taking Bronze in twelve days of challenging racing, both of them flying 40 year old Cirrus gliders, while Matt Davis and Mike Gatfield finished 10th and 15th respectively in their class in more modern LS8 gliders. Just getting there was a daunting task – even with help from the British Gliding Association, and during 2015, in addition to flying every UK competition they could and honing their skills, with their spare evening hours used to obtain sponsorship – sponsors included BA and LandRover. Team captain Andy Davis MBE described “a truly inspiring and gutsy performance in the final race - an audacious game plan brilliantly executed with great tactical awareness”.
