Having learnt to fly hang gliders with Keith Cockcroft in the late 1980s, Bernard later took up paragliding with Steve Hudson. Joining the embryonic BHPA emergency parachute team, he became a key figure as club repacking grew and matured. For two decades, while acting as the Derbyshire club’s regular trainer, he has provided guidance at other club repacks and trained many new BHPA repackers. Always quiet and unassuming, Bernard’s approach is characterised by a light touch, understated humour and endless patience, underpinned by the depth of his knowledge. The effort he has expended to promote good practice is exemplary.
