Rob received a bursary award as a teenager which allowed him to obtain his microlight licence. Since then he has shown a single-minded determination to succeed which has seen him obtain his instructor rating and obtain a degree in aeronautical engineering. But he has also dominated the National, European and World microlight competition scene for the past ten years in either flexwing or fixed wing classes. He has been World Champion four times - European Champion four times, and World Air Games champion. Between 2004 and 2014 he has won a Gold in every international microlighting competition with the exception of 2006 (only silver!) and 2012 (bronze). And in 2015 he was event director for the 2015 FAI World Air Games microlight competition in Dubai. He devised a format which caught the attention of everyone there, was great television audiences, and is capable of being used at other venues. In addition all this he owns a busy microlight school, and is currently the BMAA’s Treasurer and Chairman of the training committee. Not yet 35, Rob combines intelligence, focus and determination, and his record in competition deserves recognition on its own, but his contribution to microlighting, both national and international at an organisational level in 2015 is quite outstanding.
