Lee and Dominic have been pioneering a new, low cost collision avoidance device called PilotAware which receives ADS-B transmissions from suitable Mode S transponders, and also transmits a radio signal with GPS position data to other PilotAware units. This information is then delivered to a tablet-based navigation system, such as SkyDemon, where traffic details are then shown on the screen. Development by PilotAware team and the navigation software producers continues. The beauty of PilotAware is that it is already available as a ready-to-use unit at a price which will encourage its widespread use. Although look out will remain our primary means of avoiding a mid-air collision, technology like PilotAware will undoubtedly enhance safety.
